NEWTON, Mass. — A child has had his wish fulfilled after a well-placed bet with his disbelieving father.

Remi Urbano, 7, would not stop asking for a cat, so his father made him a deal: if a picture of him and his 1-year-old sister, Evelyn, could get 1,000 "likes" on Facebook, a cat would be theirs.

Dan Urbano thought it was a pipe dream, and didn't worry much about what he may have been getting himself into. His wife, Marisa, thought differently.

"Dan thinks there is NO way we can do this. I say there is. Help us out. We really want a cat named Hairy Pawturrr. If you can't like, shares. Shares count too! Thanks so much everyone!!" she posted on Facebook.

Accompanying the statement was a photo of her children, with Remi holding a whiteboard that said "Hey Facebook! My sister and I really want a cat. Our papa promises we can get one if we can get 1,000 likes. Please like this picture. Thank you."

The photo was posted on Wednesday, and Marisa told ABC's "Good Morning America" the family could look forward to getting a cat within hours. And less than a week later, the photo has received more than 115,000 likes and has been shared nearly 106,000 times.

"Never, ever did we think this was going to happen," Marisa Urbano said.

ABC News reported the family adopted over the weekend a female cat from a local animal shelter. They named the cat "Hairietta L. Pawturr," since it's a girl. The "L" represents the massive amount of likes the Facebook post received.
