Utah football: Spring practice, day 11

Posted Apr 11th - 7:06pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — These are the dog days of spring practice with many things looking the same as the day before, a little groundhog day if you will.

The Utes were not in full pads taking in a bit of a lighter practice before the scrimmage on Saturday.

Here are five things that I noticed at practice today:

VIDEO: Possible Utah recruit Kenneth Ogbe YouTube Interview

Posted Apr 10th - 1:18pm by Mike Grant

I have received many questions about Kenneth Ogbe, a possible basketball recruit from Germany. I saw this interview from him a decided (with a slight nudge from @UofUMansir and @UofUUtes) to translate.

I am absolutely including a disclaimer - it has been 13 years since I have been in Germany and these guys are speaking very fast but from what I can tell, Ogbe is very well-spoken.

Question: Kenneth Ogbe, MVO of the NBBL All-Star game, the south has won five out of six, are you okay with that?

Utah football spring practice day 9 report, Red Rocks prepare for nationals

Posted Apr 9th - 6:45pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — Brrrrrr ... so much for the indoor practice facility.

The Utes practiced outdoors in Rice-Eccles Stadium on Tuesday. It was about 40 degrees outside. That was fun. From my vantage point it looked like it took the team a few reps to get warmed up in the cold as well.

One of the most interesting position battles continues to be the running back group with Lucky Radley, James (Bubba) Poole, and now Karl Williams. All three got some run with the first team and today, Bubba Poole was shredding the defense.

SALT LAKE CITY — Welcome in to the debut of the Crimson Corner, a webisode covering all things relating to the University of Utah.

This week we broke down the Utes' latest spring scrimmage, with interviews from Kyle Whittingham, Dennis Erickson, Kalani Sitake and QB Travis Wilson. We also showcase a special interview by wide receiver Kenneth Scott interviewing teammate Dres Anderson.

Utah football: Spring scrimmage recap, day 9

Posted Apr 5th - 9:03pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah competed its first spring scrimmage of 2013 Friday afternoon at Rice-Eccles Stadium under picture perfect weather conditions.

While the rain cleared out just in time for the 100-play scrimmage, the offense and defense each took their shots at proving which side of the ball is better thus far through three weeks of spring camp.

Utah's top three quarterbacks, returning starter Travis Wilson, sophomore Adam Schulz and true freshman Brandon Cox combined for 387 passing yards.

Utah football: Spring practice, day 8

Posted Apr 4th - 7:52pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah got back at it today on the practice field, a day before a 90-play scrimmage. The team was not in full pads but did have a spirited practice again emphasizing tempo.

All of the coaches were stressing the speed. Kyle Whittingham, Dennis Erickson, Brian Johnson and Dan Finn were trying to get the offense to move faster in between plays. Sitake, Shah, and Scalley were pacing the defense on the other side. As fast as the offense moves, the defense tried to get in position and adjust faster.

It is well-documented that the Utes are trying to make the offense more explosive. Robert Jackson and I spoke to Jake Murphy and he categorized explosive plays as 12 or more yards. Judging from practice the offense looked as if it would take a shot at a possible explosive play about every three downs.

Utah football: Spring practice, day 7

Posted Apr 2nd - 7:47pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — Week three of spring practice is underway for the University of Utah, a week that is already off to a great start by the receivers.

WR Anthony Denham had a tremendous practice today, finding holes in the defense time and time again. With his 6'4 frame, he has big play potential written all over him. If he can continue to hold on to the ball like he did today, he shouldn't have a problem moving up the depth chart.

WR Dres Anderson showcased his speed by catching a simple slant before turning on the afterburners and racing to the corner of the endzone. During the tackle a cameraman got knocked down, and because no one got hurt, it is quite funny to watch over and over again. Be sure to check it out in the video player above.

Utah Spring Football – Day 6, Offense looked good

Posted Mar 30th - 2:18pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — Day six of spring football for the Utes and the offense shined highlighted by a couple of long QB/WR hookups.

The Utah coaches have spoken all spring about how Travis Wilson and also Adam Schulz have looked really good and in command of the offense.

It is apparently not too different to what they did last year but the players have really taken to what Coaches Dennis Erickson and Brian Johnson want to do.

The 1998 Runnin' Utes, looking back 15 years

Posted Mar 29th - 12:11pm by Mike Grant

It is hard to believe that it has been 15 years since the Utes made their run in the NCAA tournament in 1998, but it has.

Do you remember how the Utes got to the title game?

Here is a quick recap of each game:

Utah football: Spring practice, day 5

Posted Mar 28th - 11:08pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — And just like that, the Utes are already five practices into spring football.

Mike Grant and I spent a good amount of time watching Coach Shah run drills with the defensive backs, and Keith McGill looked considerably better and was receiving a lot of praise from the former attorney turned coach.

Another standout in the secondary is Eric Rowe, who is separating himself as the defense's number one player.

Utah football: Spring practice, day 4; Utes open softball stadium

Posted Mar 26th - 10:32pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — What a difference a just few days can make.

On Saturday we watched a practice from a frozen tundra at Rice-Eccles, where receivers dropped pass after pass and the team was rewarded with running wind sprints for the final 45 minutes of practice.

Not only was Monday afternoon warmer, but the players looked significantly sharper out on the field.

Utes Put the Pads On - Day 3 of Spring Camp

Posted Mar 23rd - 11:05pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — You could hear the ooohs and ahhhs from every corner of the field. Travis Wilson dropped back, threw a dart over the middle when a window opened up for Quinton Pedroza after "Q" had burned the defense with the post and BAM!

Eric Rowe, Utah's junior safety was standing at the goal line a walloped Pedroza.

"It's starting to get real physical out there. It's starting to get more competitive." Rowe said. "It's just a huge buildup. Everybody's hyped up ready to hit. The one time they came my way I made an opportunity out of it."

Utah football: Spring practice, day 2

Posted Mar 21st - 7:18pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utes finished their second spring practice in a chilly Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Just how cold was it? Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham was wearing pants!

The defense appears to be ahead of the offense, which would be typical for only the second practice of the spring. The bright spot from the offense would be the definite improvement in the passing game, with Travis Wilson and Adam Schulz looking sharp at quarterback.

Utah Football Pro Day: Star was a star

Posted Mar 20th - 3:40pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — Today was a much anticipated day, perhaps more than any other pro day in the country, where we finally found out that Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei is exactly who we thought he was - a star.

It was well-documented that Star Lotulelei was unable to work out at the NFL Combine last month in Indianapolis due to a supposed heart condition.

NFL scouts from every NFL team came to Salt Lake City Wednesday morning to see the Utah Pro Day and if Star was worth their team's first round draft pick, or any pick for that matter.

Utes kick off spring football practice

Posted Mar 19th - 9:23pm by Mike Grant and Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah kicked off spring football practice Tuesday afternoon in front of fans and a plethora of media gathered at the Utes practice fields.

The weather was perfect as the Utes' offense under new co-offensive coordinator Dennis Erickson began to take shape.

Back was starting quarterback Travis Wilson, and although he struggled right at the start of practice, he got into the zone and was throwing bullets right on the money. Adam Schultz continued to shine as the best passer of the bunch, while newcomer Brandon Cox turned some heads with his excellent athleticism and his ability to make the correct read on the zone option.

Utah vs. Cal Tournament Preview

Posted Mar 14th - 3:07pm by Mike Grant

LAS VEGAS — One down, one more to go.

The Utah basketball team cannot get ahead themselves. It is time to take Crash Davis' advice and learn the clichés.

Utah has to take this one day at a time, one game at a time.

Utah vs. USC Tournament Preview

Posted Mar 13th - 2:34pm by Mike Grant

LAS VEGAS — Do the Utes have a chance? Yeah they have a chance!

The Utah basketball team is in Las Vegas for the PAC-12 tournament and they're full of confidence and realize that they have nothing to lose. With those two ingredients, plus some momentum from a great weekend, and a USC team in turmoil, that just might equal a win.

The last two games against Oregon State and Oregon were a glimpse of what Utah fans had hoped to see much earlier in the season. Better late than never. They saw a team that they could cheer for; they saw unity; they saw a winner.
