VIDEO: Crimson Corner 5-4

Posted May 5th - 12:10pm by Mike Grant and Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — This week in the Crimson Corner we catch up with Golden State Warriors center and former #1 overall NBA draft pick from the Utah Utes Andrew Bogut on his team's first round playoff series win. We also talk recruiting with Brian Swinney of insidetheutes.com.

Bogut looking forward to series with Spurs

Posted May 5th - 12:17am by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — It has been a tough road back from injury but it looks like former Utah Utes center Andrew Bogut is back to his old self.

In the playoff series against the Denver Nuggets, Bogut averaged 8.1 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks. The individual highlight of the series had to be the game six performance. Bogut had 14 points, 21 rebounds, and 4 blocks, very reminiscent of how Utah fans remember him while he was playing in the Huntsman Center.

The NBA conference semifinals begins Monday against the Spurs. It goes without saying that this series will be a difficult one for the Warriors, and especially for Bogut as he and Tim Duncan will match up.

Every week we here at the Crimson Corner are teaming up with the InsidetheUtes.com staff to bring you the UTEcast, a podcast focusing on everything Utes.

This week we looked back at the Utes' 2013 draft class, plus projected what Utes could be the next in line. We also gave our take on the post-Spring depth chart and what surprises we came across. In part two we had Ute targets SJ (2014, safety/running back) and TJ (2015, linebacker/fullback) Fehoko out of Cottonwood High School in studio to talk with them about their recruiting process and what they are looking for in a potential college destination.

Former U. players have a lasting friendship

Ten years ago (and change), the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots played for the Super Bowl. It was the only time Steve Smith has gotten his team that far. The Panthers were leading, and then Tom Brady and Adam Vinatieri ruined Carolina’s dreams.

It’s a tough subject to bring up to the Panthers' five-time Pro-Bowl wide receiver. “There’s always plays left out, whether win or lose. The best thing was playing with Jordan (Gross) and Kevin (Dyson). The most intriguing and best part about the Super Bowl in my career this far, there has only been two seasons that I have not had No. 69, Jordan Gross, in the huddle with me, and so that’s pretty special, that means a lot.

3 reasons why Carolina is a great fit for Star Lotulelei

Posted Apr 30th - 4:56pm by Robert Jackson

The Carolina Panthers waited patiently for two hours before they were on the clock with their mid-first round pick in last weekend's NFL Draft.

When they looked on the board and saw who was still available, it took them a whopping 30 seconds to pick up Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei with the 14th overall pick.

Lotulelei was projected by most draft experts to land somewhere between first and seventh overall, but after a heart condition was discovered just before the NFL combine, his draft stock took a hit.

SALT LAKE CITY — Welcome in to a special NFL Draft edition of the Crimson Corner. Two Utes were drafted, as Star Lotulelei went to the Carolina Panthers with the 14th pick and Joe Kruger got selected in the seventh round by the Philadelphia Eagles. Jeremiah Jensen, Robert Jackson, and Mike Grant break down the draft plus the unrestricted free agents that got picked up by NFL teams.

Another Kruger in the NFL

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utes continue to get players to the next level and the 2013 NFL draft is no different.

Star Lotulelei went 14th overall to the Carolina Panthers and now Joe Kruger has been selected 212th overall by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Joe will join his older brother Paul and his brother-in-law Tony Bergstrom in the NFL.

Friday Star was introduced to the media in Charlotte. Thanks to Chris Clark at WCNC, here is the press conference.

There's a Star going to Carolina

Posted Apr 25th - 9:01pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — "With the 14th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers select Star Lotulelei, defensive tackle, Utah." NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said.

With that, the professional career for the defensive tackle out of Utah begins.

"I'm thrilled to finally know where I will begin my professional football career. I've heard great things about the Carolina organization and the city of Charlotte. I can't wait to get started." Star Lotulelei said.

NFL draft preview: Utah

Posted Apr 21st - 4:18pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — The NFL draft begins this Thursday and for Utah fans this draft has to be one of the most exciting since 2005 when Alex Smith went first overall to the San Francisco 49ers.

It has been talked about day in and day out since the end of the football season where Star Lotulelei would go and when he would go. Early in the projection process he was slated to go first overall to the Kansas City Chiefs. Lately the mock drafts have Star going a little later to Philadelphia 4th overall, or even possibly even as late as 14th to the Carolina Panthers.

Reggie Dunn, Mr. Return Man Extraordinaire will also await his name this coming weekend. Utah fans will most likely have to wait deep into Saturday to hear his name if his name gets called at all.

SALT LAKE CITY — This week in the Crimson Corner we recap Utah's Red and White Game with highlights, postgame interviews and, as always, our analysis.

Utah football: Offense dominates Red and White scrimmage

Posted Apr 20th - 4:58pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — It has been a while since one coach has had more of an immediate impact on a program than co-offensive coordinator Dennis Erickson has had on Utah football this spring.

Both the Red and White team offenses put on quite a show show Saturday as the White team edged out the Red team 35-28 during the annual Red and White game Saturday in front of a rain drenched 8,537 at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The Red and White offenses seemed to score at will in the first quarter, taking the first five combined drives 65 yards for touchdowns.

Utah football: Spring practice, day 14

Posted Apr 18th - 8:49pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah wrapped up its last practice in preparation for Saturday's Red and White game Thursday afternoon at the practice fields.

The players went through a few walkthroughs and the coaches broke out the team into the Red and White rosters that we will see on Saturday.

One of the position groups that has excelled this spring has been the offensive line. We caught up with two of the anchors of the line, CJ Poutasi and Jeremiah Tofaeono. You can catch the interview in the player above, as well as Coach Kyle Whittingham's post practice remarks.

SALT LAKE CITY — So much for that indoor football facility...

The Utes were once again outdoors in balmy conditions at Rice-Eccles, luckily Mike Grant let me borrow his beanie or I may not have survived.

Although the weather was downright chilly, the players were more crisp and concise than we've seen all spring.

SALT LAKE CITY — This week in the Crimson Corner we recap Utah's second spring scrimmage, introduce you to the Utes' Team #AFG, catch up with former wide receiver Steve Smith and the Red Rocks getting ready for Nationals.

Utah football: Running backs carry offense in second spring scrimmage

Posted Apr 13th - 5:17pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — Over the last four weeks of practice, Utah's offense has been able to move the ball up and down the field.

That came to an abrupt end Saturday in the Utes' second spring scrimmage.

"We did not get enough chunk yardage plays today and our quarterbacks were not as effective as they need to be," Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said after the practice session. "It didn't help that we dropped some passes."

Utah football: Spring practice, day 11

Posted Apr 11th - 7:06pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — These are the dog days of spring practice with many things looking the same as the day before, a little groundhog day if you will.

The Utes were not in full pads taking in a bit of a lighter practice before the scrimmage on Saturday.

Here are five things that I noticed at practice today:

VIDEO: Possible Utah recruit Kenneth Ogbe YouTube Interview

Posted Apr 10th - 1:18pm by Mike Grant

I have received many questions about Kenneth Ogbe, a possible basketball recruit from Germany. I saw this interview from him a decided (with a slight nudge from @UofUMansir and @UofUUtes) to translate.

I am absolutely including a disclaimer - it has been 13 years since I have been in Germany and these guys are speaking very fast but from what I can tell, Ogbe is very well-spoken.

Question: Kenneth Ogbe, MVO of the NBBL All-Star game, the south has won five out of six, are you okay with that?
