Vehicle searches could be part of your airport experience at Salt Lake International very soon.
That's for people who want to park in 500 short-term parking spaces at the airport.
The searches will begin Tuesday morning.
Government specialist Richard Piatt reports.
This is all to satisfy new security rules at the airport.
Keep in mind that it's just some of the spots in the parking garage across the street from the airport.
But if you park in those spots, your vehicle will be searched.
We're talking about the closest parking places on the second and third levels of the airport.
These spots fall within 300 feet of the terminal, which is also within the FAA security guidelines.
They've been blocked off for months.
To re-open them the airport needs to comply with the security procedures.
Barbara Gann/Salt Lake Int'l Airport: "IT'S A SIMPLE PROCEDURE. THE CREWS WILL SIMPLY LOOK UNDER YOU HOOD, IN YOUR TRUNK, THROUGHOUT THE CAR, LOOKING FOR ANY OBVIOUS SIGN OF AN EXPLOSIVE OR POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS DEVICE."
The Airport Authority is negotiating the requirement to the Transportation Security Administration.
They're studying possible effects of an explosion in the parking garage--proposing reinforced glass in the terminal.
