Failing Schools

(Salt Lake City-AP) -- The Education Department says that nearly three percent of Utah's 802 public schools are failing.

That means students in 22 Utah schools where test scores fell short of state standards can choose to go to better schools in their districts this fall.

Nationally pupils at schools that don't meet state academic standards will have the choice of another school because of an act signed by President Bush in January.

Utah fared better than the national average. Nationally, eight thousand, six hundred schools have failed to meet learning standards, which amounts to 9 percent of U-S public schools.
