Kaysville Girl Makes Pins To Benefit Afghan Children

As we see the images of war-ravaged Aghanistan, it's hard to ignore the faces of it's people-- particularly the children. Many have lost parents, many don't have a enough food to eat.

That's why the efforts of a ten-year-old Kaysville girl are so extraordinary.

News Specialist Jill Atwood has her story.

Errin Johnson was adopted from Romania when she was just a baby. She grew up with all the advantages of this counrty and realizes how lucky she is to be here.

Now, she's hoping to make things just a little more bearble for those children that aren't so lucky.

From the comforts of their living room floor Errin Johnson, her brother Ty, and her mom Leslie man a small assembly line, hoping to make a difference one patriotic pin at a time.

Leslie Johnson/Errin's Mother: "ERRIN CAME HOME THE DAY AFTER THE ATTACK AND SAID, 'MOM'..AND SHE'S REALLY HYPER. SHE SAYS, 'MOM I WANT TO DO SOMETHING TO HELP. WHAT COULD I DO TO HELP?'"

Her mom says Errin has a tender spot for kids, and has always gone to bat for the underdog.

After some thought, they called an artist friend and the pin design was born.

Half the profits go to America's Fund for Afghanistan Children. The other half go to Errin for her own needs.

Adopted from Romania at just six weeks old, her parents quicly discovered something wasn't quite right.

"SHE GREW OKAY UNTIL SHE WAS ABOUT 18 MONTHS OLD AND THEN SHE QUIT. AND THROUGH SOME TESTING AND SOME DIFFERENT THINGS, THEY DISCOVERED THAT HER BODY DOESN'T PRODUCE GROWTH HORMONES."

Errin has to have a shot six days a week, but she's certainly not the type to feel sorry for herself.

Her thoughts are with children she doesn't even know, a half a world away.

Errin Johnson: "THEY ARE LOSING THEIR PARENTS AND THEY DON'T HAVE VERY MUCH FOOD OR MONEY."

So far business is booming-- 300 have sold quickly, and at $5.50 a pop, the profits add up quickly.

"WE KIND OF FEEL LIKE ERRIN HAS A SPECIAL MISSION HERE AND WE KIND OF FEEL LIKE MAYBE THIS IS A START OF WHAT SHE..WHAT HER FUTURE MAY BE."

Already Errin is sending off $600 to the White House with a letter of her accomplishments, and of course two pins--one for President Bush and one for the First Lady.

So far the pins are selling by word of mouth. They are also in a couple stores, Deseret Book being one of them. People who order by mail pay $4 extra for priority shipping.
