Address: America's Fund for Afghan Children
The Postal Service has established a special ZIP code for youngsters to use in sending in contributions to assist the children of Afghanistan.
President Bush ended his White House news conference Thursday night by urging the nation's children each to contribute a dollar to a fund to provide foor and medicine for the children of Afghanistan.
The White House and Postal Service said Friday these contributions should go to:
America's Fund for Afghan Children
c/o The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, D.C. 20509-1600
Postmaster General John Potter said his agency will promote the program through its literacy efforts in 300,000 classrooms.
President Bush is not the first to call on America's children.
During World War I, President Wilson and U.S. Food Administration chief Herbert Hoover asked American children to conserve food and "clean their plates."
They were even asked to take the "Child's No Waste Pledge."
"I pledge my allegiance to my flag, in service true I will not lag. I'll not despise my crusts of bread, nor make complaint, whatever fed. On wheatless days I'll eat no wheat, on other days eat less of sweet. I'll waste no pennies, spoil no clothes, and so I'll battle against our foes."
