THE WATER — Max, like all dogs, is a good boy.

Like many yellow Labradors, Max has a sweet face and a squishy body that's just right for cuddling. But Max doesn't always identify as a dog.

For you see, Max has a special interest that arguably reclassifies him as a mermaid. Max likes to dive to the bottom of large bodies of water.

We're not talking about jumping off a pier or otherwise dunking his head and body underwater only to pop up again as quickly as possible. We're talking turning his tail up to the sky and diving to the bottom of a lake and exploring for as long as he can.

It's not something you see everyday, and it may not even be something you will ever see another dog do. However, Max's unusual habits don't end there.

This aquatic pup has a goal when he dives — to retrieve rocks. It's unclear what he loves about rocks, but he certainly loves them. In fact, he retrieved a rock from a lake in Central Park that came home with him, and he still gets excited to this day when he sees it.

Max obviously loves the water … but does he really? To add another strange layer to Max's interests, he only loves big, natural bodies of water where he can dive. He doesn't really care for pools, and, according to his owner, he really, really hates baths.

He's an anomaly that may be hard to understand but very easy to love.

In the video, you'll see and hear about it all. You'll see his back legs shoot up behind him and slowly slip under while Max dives, you'll see him retrieve a giant rock that he can't carry out of the water, and you'll see his very sad face when it's time to rinse off after diving in a lake. And yes, it's all very adorable.

You can see more of Maximilian on the very appropriately named Instagram, @yellowlabmarine.
