UNDATED (AP) — Top officials in the White House were aware in early 2019 of classified intelligence indicating Russia was secretly offering bounties to the Taliban for the deaths of Americans, a full year earlier than has been previously reported. That's according to U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the intelligence. The assessment was included in at least one of President Donald Trump’s written daily intelligence briefings at the time, according to the officials. Then-national security adviser John Bolton also told colleagues he briefed Trump on the intelligence assessment in March 2019.
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand has canceled its plans to host a major meeting of U.S. and Asian leaders next year because of the coronavirus, opting instead to host a virtual summit. New Zealand was scheduled to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, which would have brought thousands of people to the country throughout the year, culminating in a leader’s week in November. Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters said it was necessary to cancel the summit now for planning and security reasons. Malaysia has been hosting this year's meetings virtually as well. APEC focuses on trade issues. Its 21 members include the U.S., China, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Indonesia and Hong Kong.
UNDATED (AP) — South Korea has reported 43 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 from across the country as infections begin to spread beyond the greater capital area, which has been at the center of a virus resurgence since late May. The figures announced by South Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday brought national totals to 12,800 cases, including 282 deaths. Seventeen of the new cases came from the Seoul metropolitan area, where about half of South Korea’s 51 million people live, while infections were also reported in other major cities such as Daejeon, Gwangju, Busan and Sejong. Twenty of the new cases were linked to international arrivals.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A federal appeals court panel has upheld most of Wisconsin Republicans' voting restrictions in a long-awaited decision. A federal judge in Madison in 2016 found most of the restrictions were unconstitutional and discriminate against the poor and racial minorities. That same year another federal judge in Milwaukee found voters who lack photo IDs could vote with an affidavit affirming their identity. A 7th Circuit Court of Appeals panel on Monday upheld most of the restrictions, marking a win for conservatives just months ahead of the November presidential election.
BALTIMORE (AP) — The NAACP is working with the District of Columbia to move its headquarters from Baltimore to Washington. The civil rights organization said in a news release Monday it has signed a letter of intent to move its national headquarters within the future redevelopment of the Frank D. Reeves Center of Municipal Affairs. District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that the city looks forward to welcoming the organization to Washington. NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson says the move will enable the organization to amplify the voices of Black people as it fights for crucial policy changes and economic empowerment needed in communities across the country.
