SALT LAKE CITY — A fire Friday evening destroyed a cabin in a gated community at Parley's Canyon, firefighters reported.

Crews were called to the blaze about 6 p.m. in the cabin in the Mount Aire community off of I-80, Unified Fire Authority spokesman Matthew McFarland said.

Limited access into the area on a single-lane, winding canyon road prevented more than two fire engines from making it to the blaze, McFarland said. The cabin was fully engulfed when they arrived within 15 minutes of the call.

However, crews were able to quickly suppress the fire, he said.

Though the area is remote, McFarland said he applauds the gated community for keeping a large water holding tank and fire hydrants throughout so firefighters could "quickly establish a water supply."

No one was home at the time, he said. After the fire started, it took "a while" before anyone noticed it, according to McFarland.

Though a family lost their second home, McFarland said it was a "big save" that the fire didn't happen two months from now, when it could've turned into a large wildfire. The fire had tried to spread into brush and undergrowth, he said.

Fire investigators were still trying to determine the cause as of late Friday evening.

No injuries were reported.
