SALT LAKE CITY— In the years since smart home technology first became popular, hundreds of new smart devices have flooded the market. But even though smart technology becomes increasingly more innovative and entertaining every year, those simple devices that emphasize security— namely, smart door locks and security cameras— remain some of the most popular devices.

When you consider that a burglary occurs every eighteen seconds in the United States, and a full 34 percent of burglars enter through the front door, you want to make sure your lock is both practical and secure.

Smart locks are one way to beef up your home’s technology and safety, but you may wonder if there are any potential security bugs that could put you at risk. If you’re considering swapping your traditional bolts for smart locks, review these pros and cons to help guide your decision.

The pros of smart locks

Technology is supposed to make our lives easier, more convenient and safer. And in many ways, smart locks live up to these expectations.

Simple, keyless entry

Smart locks function using passcodes, Bluetooth or biometrics, so you don’t have to worry about you or the kids getting locked out of the house or losing a key for a potential burglar to find.

Convenience for guests

Most smart locks let you create hundreds of temporary and permanent passcodes, so you can give temporary access to visiting guests and then delete the passcode when they’ve left.

Advanced monitoring

By creating unique passcodes for each person, from your kids to the dog-sitter, you can use the smart lock’s proprietary app to see who entered or left your home and when.

Remote access

Through the app, you can check to see the status of the lock and receive alerts if someone attempts to tamper with it or inputs a wrong passcode.

Smart doorbell compatibility

Some smart locks can connect with smart doorbells, so you can receive phone alerts when someone is at your door and, through the doorbell’s camera and audio system, see who is there and speak to them.

The cons of smart locks

Even the best technology has its limitations, and smart locks are no exception. Smart locks are designed to be more secure than traditional door locks, but there are a few flaws in some models, so be aware of these potential issues before making a purchase.

Vulnerable code

Older keypad smart locks will open for anyone who knows the code, so if you’ve picked a notable date or simple combination like “1234,” your lock may be vulnerable.

Potentially hackable software

Nearly any piece of technology has the potential to be hacked. A tech-savvy hacker could infiltrate the lock if the firmware isn’t kept updated. At the hacker convention DEF CON 2016, two security experts tested sixteen smart locks, only to determine that 75 percent weren’t sufficiently secure.

Limited whole-home integration

Most people with smart devices want all of their smart tech to interact smoothly and work as a united smart home, but not all smart locks do this. So while these high-tech locks often pair easily with smart doorbells, many can’t connect with other popular devices, like the Amazon Echo.

Bulky design

Smart locks are still new to the market and in early development. Even among some of the most attractive designs, users have complained about the size and bulk of the locks.

High price

As you’re getting many more features and capabilities with a smart lock, you’ll also pay a much higher price— the savviest smart locks cost more than $200.

Despite potential security concerns, the newness of the tech and the price tag, high-quality smart locks make great additions to many people’s homes. Further, developers are continuously making updates to thwart hackers and improve integrations, so some current concerns may not be around in future iterations.

There are dozens of smart locks on the market, and each has unique features. After weighing these pros and cons, use a buyer’s guide to help you investigate the best options on the market. Compare the prices and features so you can find an option that’s right for you and your needs. With a smart lock on your front door, you can boost your home’s security and say goodbye to the old-fashioned house key.
