SALT LAKE CITY -- One of the most important things a beginning skier can learn is etiquette.
Scott Mathers, training director at the Alf Engen Ski School, shared some tips.
- Getting off the chair lift "The overall etiquette, when you get off the chair is slide away, slide down the ramp and move off, out of the way so that other people behind you can get down the ramp and move off as well."
- Skiing in congested areas"Anytime you see a bright orange sign on the hill, it's warning you of an area that could be congested, where there are trails coming together or lots of skiers tend to gather. Pay a little extra attention, slow your speed down and be prepared for things to be happening in those areas."
- Right of way"The skiers' responsibility code indicates the downhill skier always has the right of way. Sometimes that's a little tricky when trails are merging. I think your best approach is to be aware of what's going on around you and always give other people around you room so you don't frighten people or you don't have a collision."
- Be seen "Ski rhythmically and predictably. If you're going to stop, stop off on the side of the trial and make sure that you can be seen from above. It's a bad idea to stop over a rollover terrain where skiers from above can't see you."
