KSL-TV Channel 5 Background

KSL is one of America's most respected television stations, having earned honors and awards from every television industry organization. It began as radio station KZN on May 6, 1922, broadcasting from a tin shack atop the old Deseret News Building at Main and South Temple streets. The first broadcast of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir was on July 15, 1929. KSL was one of the earliest affiliates of the CBS network in 1932.

KSL Television came on the air June 1, 1949, using a transmission tower atop that same building on Main Street, then called the Union Pacific Building. The station was part of the fledgling CBS Television Network. Later that year, KSL moved to Broadcast House on Social Hall Avenue.

In 1952, a 370-foot transmission tower was constructed on Farnsworth Peak in the Oquirrh Mountains to improve coverage all along the Wasatch Front and into Tooele County. KSL also organized a system of more than one hundred translator stations to carry the television signal throughout Utah and into Idaho, Nevada, and Wyoming -- giving KSL the largest geographic coverage of any station in America.

The first color broadcast by KSL Television was in 1964. In June of 1964, Bonneville International Corporation was created as the parent company of KSL. Bonneville now owns and operates 21 radio and television stations from New York to Los Angeles.

In 1984, Bonneville and KSL relocated to the new Broadcast House at Triad Center. KSL Television became an affiliate of the NBC Television Network in September of 1995. KSL Radio continued its sixty-year affiliation with the CBS Radio Network.

KSL Television continues to be one of the leading stations in America -- with outstanding audience loyalty, strong local news, trend-setting technology, and unmatched community involvement.
