Shelley joined KSL 5 Television in 1976 as a desk assistant, answering phones and ripping wire copy. Within a year, she was promoted to reporter. Since then, she has regularly anchored weekends, noon and morning newscasts. Her special assignments have included Olympic coverage in Atlanta and Lillehammer, documentaries on children and violence, social changes in Russia and China, as well as many issues affecting Utah families.

Shelley has also hosted audience talk shows such as "Utah This Morning," "Focus," and "TalkAbout." The National Broadcasters Association recognized "Focus" as the best community affairs programs in the country. Shelley was honored with a national award from the American Women in Radio and Television for programs on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and "Super Mom" Stress. She has been recognized by Utah's Governor for media contribution to women's issues; by the Alliance for the Mentally Ill for increasing the understanding of mental illness; and by the Utah Girl Scout Council as a role model for girls. Additionally, she has received numerous awards from the Utah Broadcasters Association.

A Salt Lake native, Shelley attended Highland High School, where she was a cheerleader and honor student. At age 17, she was the National AAU champion for one- and three-meter boards. She was selected as Utah's Junior Miss at age 18. At the National Junior Miss Contest, she won the talent competition and was awarded with a number of scholarships. Shelley studied Theatre at the University of Utah and in London, England. After completing her undergraduate degree, she and several friends started their own acting company, the Human Ensemble Repertory Theater, performing at Arrow Press Square's Glass Factory. She also did graduate work in Communications at the University of Utah.

Shelley is an avid boater, river runner, water and snow skier, and is active in many community programs. She is married to Richard Young, a professional bronze sculptor. They have two sons and a daughter.
