KAYSVILLE -- It was an emotional morning at Kaysville Junior High School. The students surprised one of their assistant principals, who is being deployed to Iraq, with an assembly.
The students sang and showed slide shows of Senior Master Sgt. Rick Miller, who has worked at Kaysville Junior High for 13 years. Maj. Gen. Brian Tarbet called Miller a hero for what he does. They presented him with a special flag to fly at the school until Miller returns from Iraq in July.
"Students, when you see that flag risen high above our school, know that that flag stands for freedom and for you. You know someone in the military, and you are connected to someone in the military who is out defending you," said PTA President Gina Knighton.
Miller said he was completely surprised by the assembly.
"This was good for me because I don't get to reflect much. I just do my job," said Miller.
The principal told the students that their Mr. Miller would be doing the same thing in the Middle East that he does for them -- making sure things are taken care of and things go smoothly.
"I don't like going on deployment, but I like feeling useful and I feel pretty useful," said Miller.
This is Miller's fourth deployment.
