PAYSON -- There is a new development in the case of a Payson man who was murdered last week. The family of Kay Mortensen has announced they are offering a cash reward for information that leads to the case being solved.
It was a week ago Monday that Kay Mortensen was killed inside his home in Payson Canyon, and now his family is putting up $25,000 of their own money as a reward in hopes of bringing some new leads to the case.
Detectives have remained unusually quiet about this case, including what happened, and haven't really released any specific information about the suspects or confirmed who else was in the home at the time of the crime. They have also not put out any solid suspect description or a composite sketch to the public.
According to a press release issued late Tuesday afternoon, the Mortensen family said, "We plead for anyone with information to come forward."
The release goes on to say, "The Utah County Sheriff's Office, along with local, state and federal law enforcement officers, have been working around the clock in an effort to solve this murder.
"Several persons of interest have already been located and interviewed. This investigation will continue until those involved are held responsible for their actions."
Beyond the press release, no one at the sheriff's office has, so far, responded to our additional questions.
Mortensen was a former BYU professor and had lived in the community for more than 25 years.
