OGDEN -- An Army sergeant faces communications fraud charges in what prosecutors say was a scheme to divert and sell military property from Hill Air Force Base.
Davis County prosecutors have charged Keith Turner, 51, with a second-degree felony count of communications fraud.
Deputy County Attorney Rick Westmoreland said Turner was taking some of the items, including computer equipment and uniforms that were supposed to continue further down the supply line. He said some of those items were destined for people being deployed overseas. Turner is accused of selling them on eBay and keeping the money.
Turner also tried to sell some uniforms to Smith and Edwards, an Ogden military surplus store. "And Smith and Edwards has a policy that they always have to have their discharge papers, and his discharge papers didn't look appropriate," Westmoreland said, "And so Smith and Edwards made the inquiry."
Westmoreland said investigators also found equipment belonging to the military in Turner's apartment. The department of defense also worked on the investigation.
Prosecutors claim Turner pocketed about $6,000.
Turner is a Sergeant First Class in the Army Reserve, working at Hill Air Force Base.
He was booked into jail and released on $10,000 bail. An initial court appearance has been set for Dec. 2.
