Fifth-graders fight H1N1 through dance
November 13th, 2009 @ 1:38pm
By Becky Bruce

BOUNTIFUL -- Kids at Muir Elementary at 2275 S. Davis Blvd. in Bountiful are learning how to protect themselves against H1N1 and other bugs by getting on the dance floor!

It's called an informance -- a dance performance that involves kids teaching kids.

Dance specialist Tina Misaka says it works well because kids learn by moving.

"I take the dance, and I integrate what they study in class so we reinforce what they're learning, and then they perform it," she says. "It connects the brain to the body."

In many cases, the fifth-graders came up with their own movements to interpret concepts like twisting strains of DNA or the way fungus grows and bacteria and viruses make you sick, and also how your antibodies come to the rescue.

Misaka says the children incorporated a Mexican folk dance as well, and even rapped about H1N1 and how to prevent it for the other students in their school.
