SANPETE COUNTY -- The Sanpete County Sheriff's Office is investigating the assault of a man Saturday night near a highway between Gunnison and Mayfield.

About 8 p.m., a farmer working in a field was approached by a man who was covered in blood, had his wrists tied up and was gagged with a cloth.

The farmer called 911, and an ambulance took the man to the hospital in Gunnison. He was later airlifted to an undisclosed hospital along the Wasatch Front.

Because the victim spoke Spanish and was in bad condition, authorities had a hard time getting any information from him about what had happened and who is responsible.

Doctors have inserted a breathing tube, and so investigators have not been able to get any more information from him.

The man has finally been identified by investigators through comparing photos, but his name has not been released.

He is currently in stable condition.
