NEWTON, Cache County — Police suspended a search Sunday night for a missing swimmer who may have drowned near the Newton Reservoir dam.

A 35-year-old man was swimming on Saturday when the group he was with noticed he was no longer with them, according to an emailed statement from Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Bartschi.

Police responded to the possible drowning call. They began searching around the dam and continued until 2 a.m. Sunday, when the search was called off, Bartschi said.

Bartschi did not confirm that the man had died. He did not release the swimmer’s name because they were still notifying his family members.

The search resumed early Sunday morning with the Cache County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team and the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team until 6 p.m., according to Cache County Sheriff D. Chad Jensen.

The Wasatch County Sheriffs Search and Rescue will join the search when it resumes Monday morning. Both the state dive team and the Wasatch County team have sonar and other equipment to aid in the search, Jensen said.
