SALT LAKE CITY — A Lennox van driver has died after rear-ending a semitruck in Salt Lake City Monday afternoon.

Police responded to the incident around 1 p.m. at 900 W. 2100 South, Salt Lake Police Sgt. Brandon Shearer said. The semitruck had stopped at a traffic light when the van collided with it.

The van driver, identified as 46-year-old Randall Searcy, died of his injuries shortly before 7 p.m., Salt Lake City police officials said in a tweet.

Photos from the scene showed the van had crashed into the semitrailer's rear right corner, smashing through the van windshield and driver's side door.

The van also struck a Utah Transit Authority pickup truck, but that collision did not cause as much damage.

The driver of the van was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where he later died. The other drivers involved were cooperating with police, Shearer said.

All westbound lanes on 2100 South between 700 and 900 West were closed for a couple hours, reopening shortly before 3 p.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Shearer said impairment or weather conditions didn't appear to be a factor in the crash.
