SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah County sheriff's deputy has been arrested in connection with child sexual abuse allegations from Arizona.

Orem police late Friday arrested Gerald Salcido, a 14-year employee with Utah County, said Sgt. Spencer Cannon, spokesman for the sheriff's office.

The deputy was placed on unpaid administrative leave.

Salcido, 63, was indicted in Maricopa County, Arizona, on two counts of sexual conduct with a minor and one count molestation of a child, all felonies, Cannon said. He did not know when Salcido was charged.

Salcido worked for another police agency in Utah, Cannon said, but declined to specify.

Salcido was booked into the Juab County Jail. His colleagues asked Orem to arrest Salcido after Maricopa officials called to tell them about the charges.

The alleged abuse occurred before Salcido's time with Utah County, Cannon said.

Details on the allegations were not available. A call to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office late Friday rang unanswered.

Cannon said the sheriff's office does rigorous background checks on potential employees and found no issues when Salcido was hired.

Utah County detectives will review Salcido's conduct during his employment with the county in light of the charges, Cannon said, but he has had no such disciplinary issues.

Cannon said he expects Salcido to be extradited to Arizona on Monday morning. Bail was set at $75,000.
