SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City officials are seeking public input on developing a plan to help manage the Foothill Trail System.
The new plan will include the nearly 100 miles of trails in the Salt Lake City foothills between Emigration Canyon and the southern boundary of Davis County, according to a news release from the Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski’s office. The plan is being implemented because many of the existing trails in the area are “unsustainable due to steep grades, widespread soil erosion, and costly maintenance challenges,” the news release said.
Most of the trails also don’t have official trailheads or signage and the lack of a coherent trail design makes it unapproachable for many beginners in the area. Currently, the only trail in the Foothills area that was professionally constructed with the intent of nonmotorized recreation is the Bonneville Shoreline Trail.
The Foothill Trail System Plan will help decrease user confusion, promote connectivity with the city’s alternative transportation networks, and minimize environmental issues, including challenges in protected watershed areas, according to the news release.
Feedback can be left regarding the current foothill trails system, as well as proposed changes and improvements via www.slcgov.com/trailsplan through January 2018. The finalized Foothill Trail System Plan is slated for final review in mid-2018.
