SPRINGVILLE — Officials are still estimating the exact damage caused after a fire broke out at an art gallery Thursday morning.
Emergency crews responded to several reports of a fire at the Brown House of Fine Arts, located at 262 S. Main, shortly after 11:35 a.m., Springville Police Lt. Warren Foster said.
Multiple fire agencies responded to the fire, including crews from Springville, Provo, Spanish Fork, Salem and Payson. The crews spent about an hour fighting the fire before it was put out, Foster said.
He added the many agencies were requested to deal with the delicate, old buildings on the street.
“There’s so many attached, it can get out of hand in a real big hurry,” he said. “It’s a big, long strip of buildings. If one goes and we lose control, it can be so much more devastating to our city and our downtown community.”
Multiple apartments and buildings were evacuated while crews fought the blaze, though nobody was displaced and no injuries were reported, Warren said. He said it appeared there was no structural damage, though there was damage to the artwork and neighboring buildings.
An exact cost will be known after all the damage is assessed. Main Street in the location of the fire was also closed for several hours due to the firefighting efforts but reopened before rush hour.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
