COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A backhoe struck a gas line and caused a fire on a public works yard in Cottonwood Heights, sending flames high into the air on Wednesday afternoon.
The fire took place at about 3 p.m. near 6580 S. 3000 East in Cottonwood Heights, police said. It was put out by about 4:15 p.m., according to Unified Fire Authority.
Officials closed 3000 East between 6500 South and Fort Union Boulevard, city officials said via Twitter.
They were asking people to avoid the area as crews cleaned up the fire. A crew from Unified Fire Authority also responded to the scene.

An equipment operator had minor injuries but did not need medical care, Unified Fire Authority said. There was no loss of gas service for Questar customers, city officials said.
