LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — Two hikers were located after being “trapped in the cold” on Mount Superior Saturday evening, officials reported.
Officials told KSL a 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were hiking near the Lake Blanche area at around 7:30 p.m. when they called 911 for help, saying they got caught in the storm and were lost, cold, and wet.
Rescuers were able to get some GPS coordinates and head toward the hikers' direction on foot, coming in from both the Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon sides, said Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke.
Rescuers hiked through "knee-deep snow" in the area, reaching the hikers two hours later.
"Rescuers have reached the victims and they are in good condition. (They) will hike out tonight via Mineral Fork Trail," Lohrke said. The anticipated hike time back down the mountain was estimated at 2-3 hours.
The victims were given food, water, and dry clothes, Lohrke said.
Information about how long the hikers had been on the mountain was not immediately available.
