SALT LAKE CITY — The State Charter School Board on July 19 will accept public comment and hear a presentation by representatives of Kairos Academy, a charter school for teen moms and pregnant teens.

The school, located in West Valley City, is appealing an earlier decision by the charter school board to revoke its charter over concerns about academic performance, qualifications of school faculty and enrollment.

Public comment will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a presentation by state charter school staff at 9:40 a.m. Representatives of the school will offer a presentation at 10 a.m. to be followed by the State Charter School Board convening a meeting at 11 a.m.

All events will be held at the offices of the Utah State Board of Education, 250 E. 500 South.

On June 20, the State Charter School Board voted unanimously to terminate the school's charter, a decision met with pushback from community members. Some 1,840 people have signed an online petition urging a reprieve for the school, which opened three years ago.

The school has offered a blended model of instruction, offering classes online and flexible class schedules at its campus at 1325 W. 2200 South. The school has also provided free on-site child care for students.

The school was placed on probation in 2015. Even charter school board members who had advocated for the school in the past voted to revoke its charter, with one board member remarking the charter was not "salvageable" after refusing "lifeline after lifeline" of help.

Kevin Fenstermacher, chairman of Kairos Academy's governing board, did not respond to requests for comment.
