BRIGHAM CITY — The Box Elder Sheriff’s Office is urging county residents to be vigilant with a business going door to door offering overpriced driveway sealing services.

Box Elder Sheriff’s chief deputy Dale Ward said a man operating a family business under the name International Sealcoating and Paving has been going around areas throughout the county sealing driveways at excessive prices.

A spokesman for this company introduces himself as Jim Costello and is joined by other family members identified as brothers, a father, a mother and a small male child who he says is his son.

“The person shows up. They enter into the deal with (the owner of the home) and start doing the work, and other people show up and help them with the work that’s going on,” Ward said. “Then they get their money and leave. In particular, in one case, they talked about showing up to do some follow-up work and check up on some things and (the homeowners) never saw them again.”

Ward said the sheriff’s office detectives are investigating two incidents within the county. He added the type of scam under investigation isn’t completely uncommon.

He also said the company may be targeting elderly residents and urged residents to ask to see city or county business licenses from anyone offering similar services.

“That in all honesty waves a red flag,” he said. “If they’re not going in and getting a proper business license to be conducting business within the community, then why are they going door to door?”

One of the vehicles associated with the company is a large pickup truck, Ward said.

Authorities encouraged anyone with information about this business or the individuals associated with it to contact the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office at 435-723-6890.
