TAYLORSVILLE — Unified police were looking Sunday for a teen girl they believe produced a can of pepper spray during a fight at the Taylorsville Dayzz festival, forcing many people — including innocent bystanders — to seek treatment.

Just as the festival was ending Saturday shortly after 11 p.m., Unified police detective Chuck Malm said a group of teens got into an "altercation" for an unknown reason. As the situation escalated, investigators believe a 16-year-old girl took out a container of pepper spray and began dispensing it.

Thousands of people were still at the festival at the time, and Malm noted, "It doesn't take much (pepper spray) to contaminate an area."

Unified Fire crews used one of their hoses to decontaminate up to 20 people, he said. About four people, including juveniles, who have asthma were transported by ambulance to local hospitals with respiratory problems, Malm said. Several more were taken by friends or family members to local hospitals, he said. Their conditions were unknown Sunday.

Malm said the spray the girl used was so potent that even Unified officers who were called to the scene could feel the effects.

Detectives had several leads Sunday as to the girl's identity, he said. As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests had been made.
