MURRAY — A man accused of shooting his neighbor in the back and then kicking his head and face several times has been charged with murder.

Carl Johnson, 56, of Murray, was charged in 3rd District Court with murder, a first-degree felony; and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, a first-degree felony.

During the afternoon of June 11, Johnson was drinking with his neighbors and Thomas Dunn, 58, at the Iris Apartments, 4865 S. State, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.

Witnesses say Johnson and Dunn got into an argument that turned into a physical confrontation, according to charging documents. When the fight was over, Johnson walked up an outdoor staircase to his apartment and returned a few minutes later with a gun, the charges state.

As Dunn walked toward the staircase, Johnson shot him, then walked down the staircase and "kicked Mr. Dunn several times in the head and face," according to charging documents.

When police arrived, Johnson waved officers over and told them his gun, a .357 Magnum, was lying on the curb, court records state.

Prosecutors have requested Johnson be held in the Salt Lake County Jail on $1 million bail.

Court records show Johnson has a minor criminal history with no other felony charges in Utah.
