SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police say three people attempted a "takeover-style" robbery at a local sandwich shop Tuesday, but it was an armed store employee who fired back.
Two men and a woman entered Quiznos, 1775 S. 4130 West, just after 6 p.m. as the store was closing.
"They came in, locked the door behind them, produced two guns and then attempted to enter the back room," said Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking. "This is a takeover-style robbery. We don't see many of these, a very scary situation."
There were two employees in the store and no customers. One of the robbers went to the employee by the counter and two others attempted to enter a back room where the second employee, a woman, was, Wilking said.
The employee tried to barricade the door. She tried to use her body to push back on the door to keep the people out, Wilking said. Eventually, she pulled out a handgun that she was carrying and fired two to six shots around the door, striking the woman intruder, he said.
The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was hit in the neck and fell to the ground. The two men — who did not return fire — took an undisclosed amount of money and then left the woman behind, Wilking said. The woman remained hospitalized in serious condition Wednesday.

Detectives did not know whether the Quiznos was picked at random or if it was a targeted robbery.
"It's hard to say what the motive was for robbing this particular location," Wilking said.
Based on information collected through the investigation, police say Cody Shane Durrant, 36, of Kearns, is a person of interest in the case. He has ties to the woman who was shot and may be driving a red Nissan Versa with Utah license plate X398AM, Wilking said.
Detectives were also looking for a man only described as Hispanic, between 30 and 40 years old, with short hair.
