SALT LAKE CITY — Kids at Hogle Zoo got to touch giant spiders as part of the "Bugzillas" exhibit on Monday. Then they got their hands on something much less creepy-crawly.

"I went home with a fidget spinner," said Noah. He took the Summer Reading Pledge with KSL's Read Today program and got fun summer swag.

Another young reader took the pledge because she enjoys books.

"My favorite part of reading is you go on an adventure," Libby said. She hopes one of those adventures will come when summer reading helps her earn free Salt Lake Bees baseball tickets.

KSL and Read Today are starting a new summer tradition. Instead of the annual Summer Book Festival, we are teaming with family events across the state and including a reading focus.

"We want to reach out to families and our community and make sure reading and summer go hand in hand," said Amanda Kizerian, Read Today event director.

Read Today kicked off the summer pop-up festivals at the Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games in Cedar City earlier this month. Ten thousand people took part in prizes, face painting, food trucks and took the Summer Reading Pledge ahead of Opening Ceremonies.

Kids have several more weeks to sign up for the summer pledge at ReadToday.com.
