Every year, Parade of Homes builders and designers turn dreams into reality. If you haven’t yet been to this year’s Utah Valley Parade of Homes, you’re in for a treat. Here are some of the trends you’ll see popping up throughout the show.

1. Coastal chic meets farmhouse

Lehi’s farmlands are now home to gorgeous custom builds, but some interiors have traded the rustic farm look for airy coastal classics. Casual, yet chic, the Parade’s 2017 beachy homes sport white shiplap walls, rattan chairs and mirrors, and nautical rope accessories. Light flooding through floor-to-ceiling windows evokes the relaxing beach lifestyle, as do soft, floating wall colors.

2. Geometric shapes

Whether it’s a kitchen backsplash, bathroom accent wall or entry floor, geometric shapes are everywhere in this year’s Parade homes. Chevron, herringbone, and hexagon tile patterns add a sense of rhythm while geometric wallpaper increases visual interest.

3. Room to grow… or rent

Ever since Airbnb introduced the shared economy to the housing world, homes are being built with short-term rents in mind. In this year’s Parade, multiple homes have spaces or entire floors that can be rented out while the family grows, making mortgages more feasible in the meantime. These rental areas often have separate entrances and separate kitchens, so that visitors need not intrude on the family.

4. A mixture of metals

If you’re looking for all matching fixtures, you won’t find them in this year’s Parade homes. The mix of finishes raises the eclectic factor and personalizes the home. One metal, brass, is cherished for its ability to introduce shiny golden tones to a space without a high price tag. This year, Parade designers have opted for a satin or brushed brass for its warm, muted glow.

5. Supersizing in the bathroom

The Houzz 2016 bathroom trends study noted the increase in size in master bathrooms. Shower sizes increased, as did shower benches, vanities, soaker tubs and more. We saw plenty of Parade homes following this trend with extra-long benches and room-for-two soaker tubs.

6. Jewel tones in the kitchen

White kitchens aren’t going anywhere, but this year’s Parade follows another national trend: dark colors in cabinetry, including navy, black, emerald green and other jewel tones.

7. Flattened cabinetry and trim

Elaborate and curved trim and cabinet surfaces are giving way to clean, straighter lines. A more contemporary shaker style, the minimal detail modernizes the look of many of this year’s Parade homes.

8. Hidden passageways and spaces

Any child loves a secret hideaway, and so do adults. Quite a few Parade homes this year require careful exploration so as not to miss hidden rooms, nooks, play spaces, or a walk-in-pantry. And, the Old World Chateau has an entire secret wing.

9. Laundry Luxe

The days of doing laundry in a dank basement are over, at least for Parade homeowners. Look for nicer lighting, as well as more storage and functional space.

10. Up high

As beautiful as the Parade homes are, we spent a lot of time looking up this year. We saw coffered ceilings and tray ceilings with recessed lighting and quite a few unusual beam patterns and shapes.

Lingering trends we still love

Crazy about gray

Grays have dominated interiors for the past five years, and they’re not going away yet.

Blue undertones are working their way into this year’s many shades of gray. Diane Shimp, a Parade designer who works with Osmond Design, suggests these soft hues flood a home with soothing, calming freshness.

Gather round

Families love gathering 'round kitchen islands so builders have increased the size of islands to accommodate larger and larger clans.

Slider barn doors

An HGTV favorite, barn doors are common in the Parade homes located on prior farmland. We saw them in bedrooms, rec rooms, offices, and more.

This year’s homes are not to be missed and there’s truly something for everyone here. But don’t delay, the Utah Valley Parade of Homes only lasts until Saturday, June 24th. See you there!
