ERIN, Wis. — Farmington golfer Daniel Summerhays rebounded from a 4-over-par 40 on the front nine to shoot 2-under 34 on the back and sit tied for 56th before the final round of the 117th U.S. Open at the Erin Hills Golf Club in Erin, Wisconsin.

Summerhays, who played college golf at BYU, opened the round with three straight bogeys before finishing off a remarkable approach shot on the par-4, 499-yard eighth hole to take a 40 in the back nine.

A pair of birdies on the back helped him shoot 74 on the day and 3 over for the tournament.

Justin Thomas set an all-time U.S. Open record for lowest round in relation to par with a 9-under 63 Saturday. Thomas bested former BYU golfer Johnny Miller’s previous record of 8-under 63 set at the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club.

Thomas is currently second to Brian Harman, who carded his second 67 of the tournament to sit at 12-under-par and one shot ahead of Thomas.
