13 places to watch free movies outside this summer

SALT LAKE CITY — Summer nights are warm in Utah, which means it's time to bring out the picnic blankets and folding chairs to enjoy a movie outside.

Multiple cities throughout Utah play family-friendly movies in the park that are free to the public.

Here are some cities holding regular outdoor movies this summer:

Ogden

The Ogden City Amphitheater, 343 25th St., will be showing free movies every Monday evening.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the movie starts at dusk.

Centerville

Movies will be played every Friday evening from June to August. Movies and locations to be determined. Check the city website for more details.

Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City is showing movies from the '80s and '90s every Friday at various locations. Movies begin around 9:15 p.m.

Time: Friday, June 9: "Hook" Location: Lindsey Gardens at 9th Avenue and M Street

Time: Friday, June 16: "E.T." Location: Jordan Park at 900 W. 1000 South

Time: Friday, June 23: "The Karate Kid" Location: Reservoir Park at 42 S. University St.

Time: Friday, June 30: "Jumanji" Location: Riverside Park at 739 N. 1400 West

Time: Friday, July 7: "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" Location: Fairmont Park at 900 E. 2361 South

Time: Friday, July 14: "Toy Story" Location: Wasatch Hollow Park at 1700 S. 1650 East

Red Butte Gardens

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the movies start at dusk at the Red Butte Garden Amphitheater at 2155 Red Butte Canyon Road. The dates have not yet been announced, so watch the website for updates.

According to the website, "to celebrate the cinematic contributions and theatrical brilliance of the undisputed best actor of all time, Red Butte Garden's Sundance screenings will consist entirely of Nicolas Cage sequels."

Admission is free and no tickets are needed.

Snowbird

The Snowbird Center plaza deck will be playing movies around 9:30 p.m. every Friday starting June 23 - Aug. 4. Popcorn, frozen cheesecake and other food will be available for purchase.

Some showings include "Sandlot," "Zootopia," "Secret Life of Pets" and "Moana."

Sundance Summer Film Series

Sundance is kicking off its 20th year of outdoor summer movie screenings on July 5. To celebrate the anniversary, they will be showcasing Sundance Film Festival classics along with fun and games at every screening. A total of 10 films will be shown from July to the end of August in a variety of locations including Salt Lake City, Park City, Ogden and Kamas.

Screenings are free and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served. Gates open and lawn games start at 7:30 p.m. and the films will start at dusk.

"Napoleon Dynamite" will start the movie series on Wednesday, July 5 at the Red Butte Garden Amphitheater in Salt Lake City. Visit the website for the full lineup.

Sandy

Sandy City will be showing movies every Friday at dusk from June to September. Locations will change to a different park each week. The movie series will kick off with "Moana" on Friday, June 9 at Buttercup Park and will end with "Grease" on Friday, Sept. 8 at the Sandy Amphitheater.

South Jordan

South Jordan City will show movies at varying dates and locations starting at 9:30 p.m. Movies will include "Star Wars: Episode VII," "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," "Moana" and more.

Draper

The Draper Amphitheater, 944 Vestry Road, will be showing "Sing" on June 16 and "Moana" on July 13.

Movies start at 9:15 p.m. and preshow entertainment will begin at 8 p.m.

Riverton

The Riverton City Park, 1452 W. 12800 South, will be showing movies every Friday from June to August. The first movie, "Storks" will be shown Friday, June 9 at the Riverton Hospital, but all the other movies will be shown at the Riverton City Park.

Food truck and market vendors will begin at 6 p.m.

Movies include "The Great Gilly Hopkins," "Pete’s Dragon," "Jungle Book," "Moana" and more.

Pleasant Grove

Movies will be played at the community center at 547 S. Locust Ave. starting around 9 p.m. on June 9, July 15 and August 11.

Movies will include "Sing" and "Moana."

Provo

Movies will be played in Rock Canyon Park at 2620 N. 1200 East every Monday night in August.

Springville

Family movies will be shown every Monday, except Friday, June 9 when they will be showing "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

The gates at the Spring Acres Arts Park, 700 S. 1300 East, open at 7 p.m. and the movies will start around 9 p.m.

Other movies will include "Sing," "The BFG," "Finding Dory" and more.

Spanish Fork

The city of Spanish Fork will be offering movies each Monday at dusk from June until August. The movies will be shown at the city park at 49 S. Main St. Here's a list of the movie lineup for the summer:

June 12: "Three Amigos!"

June 19: "Raiders of the Lost Ark"

July 3: "Pete's Dragon"

July 10: "Finding Dory"

July 31: "Toy Story"

Aug. 4: "Moana"

Aug. 11: "Hairspray"

St. George

Movies will be shown every second and fourth Friday of the month from June until September at the Town Square Park. Movies start at dusk.

Movies playing will include "The Princess Bride," "Storks," "The Little Rascals," "Trolls," "Jungle Book" and "Sing."
