WEST JORDAN — A West Jordan homeowner is hoping the city will make changes after a vehicle plowed into his house Sunday morning, barely missing two people inside.

"It wasn't how we had our holiday planned," said homeowner Robert Rutherford.

Around 7 a.m., a 17-year-old driver lost control of their vehicle, which was traveling over 50 miles per hour near 9000 South and 2700 West, officials said. The vehicle crashed into the Rutherford family's dining room, barely missing Rutherford's 9-year-old daughter and his wife.

"They were on the couch when it happened," he explained. "They were covered in glass, (and there was) brick all over."

"We are very, very lucky. The outcome could have been a lot worse," he added.

He said similar incidents have happened twice in the area in the past year. In fact, he said his surveillance cameras captured a similar crash across the street in March 2016.

"It has become an issue," he said. "(Vehicles) will fly 60 - 70 miles per hour up and down this street all day long."

Rutherford now wants West Jordan City to help solve the problem.

"I'd like the city to put up some barrier walls like they have (elsewhere) on 90th South," he said.

The driver and passenger of the car were not injured. Police are still looking into what caused the driver to lose control.

KSL was unable to reach the city for a response due to the Memorial Day holiday.
