HELPER — The Humane Society of Utah has joined in an effort to find the person responsible for the death of a service dog.

Dennis Marshall found his red heeler, Jazman, in the fenced-in backyard of his home on Thursday morning with a hole in her chest. A veterinarian later found a metal pellet believed to have been fired from an airgun. The dog is believed to have been shot sometime between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Thursday.

The Humane Society of Utah has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the dog's death.

“It is highly disturbing that a pet is not safe in its own home," Gene Baierschmidt, executive director for the Utah Humane Society, said. "The person responsible must be found and held accountable, and we hope a reward offers incentive for someone with information to step forward."

Deann Shepherd, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society, said that a strong relationship exists between those who commit animal abuse and those who later tend toward domestic violence and other forms of abuse against people.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Helper Police Department at 435-472-3719.
