OREM — The Spanish Fork and Timpanogos baseball teams will face each other Wednesday in the 4A state semifinals. Both teams have come off of impressive seasons, both winning their region titles. Spanish Fork has boasted an overall record of 24-3 on the season, while Timpanogos has gone 26-1 while only losing to a team from out of state.

The two powerhouse baseball schools have some history together, both having success in recent years. In 2015, Spanish Fork took the state title. In 2016, Timpanogos beat Spanish Fork in the second round of the playoffs and went on to win the state championship.

“We are expecting a really close, hard-fought game,” said Timpanogos head coach Kim Nelson, "and we hope to be able to execute by moving runners, getting people on and moving them over and getting those two-out RBIs.”

“Whether it is us or them, they say baseball is won by pitching and defense, and to me, whoever does that the best, that will give them the best opportunity to win,” Spanish Fork head coach Casey Nelson said. “I hope it’s us and we work like it’s going to be us, but Timpanogos has a great program and has had a very good year too, and they expect the same thing we do.”

With Timpanogos winning the state title last year, Nelson said they have had a "target on our chest" but so far have responded well. The coaches also cited confidence that their teams have going into the game, with both teams having a good mix of underclassmen and seniors. Both coaches have been involved in their respective programs for years. Nelson has been Timpanogos’ sole baseball coach in school history for the past 21 years, while Nelson has been on Spanish Fork’s coaching staff for the past five years. Prior to that, his father was the head coach for 31 years.

With both programs' high reputations and expectations, Nelson added, “You just know that whenever Spanish Fork and Timpanogos meet up that it’s going to be a good game.”

The Spanish Fork and Timpanogos semifinal game will be played at 4:30 p.m. at the Brent Brown Ballpark at UVU. Maple Mountain will face Salem Hills at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, while the winner will advance and face the winner of Skyridge and Skyline at 7 p.m. in the one-loss bracket.
