OGDEN — The loud, bellowing whistle could be heard through much of downtown Ogden Tuesday morning as an old steam engine pulled into Union Station along Wall Avenue.

The 844, which is also known as The Living Legend, was recently restored and is now making a pass through Utah, eventually stopping in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The engine is maintained and operated by a team headed up by Ed Dickens, senior manager of Union Pacific's Heritage Operations division.

"The reaction of the crowd and the people, seeing their smiling faces, seeing the moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, that's really the best part for all of us," Dickens said.

Union Pacific's 844 was built in 1944. The company stopped using steam engines in 1959, which is why Dickens said seeing a working one up close is a rare opportunity for many people.

"People that are into steam locomotives, it doesn't really get much better than the Union Pacific steam program," he said.

The 844 Living Legend will be on display at Union Station in Ogden from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 26. It will depart from there at 8 a.m. Thursday.
