CACHE COUNTY — Crews worked to rescue a woman and a young child after their car crashed into the water near Hyrum Dam Friday night.

The car was traveling near the dam around 9:25 p.m. when the woman driving missed a corner and the vehicle went into the water, according to Cache County Sheriff's Sgt. Wyatt Goring.

The car was about halfway submerged in the water, and the woman and child were alert and talking as crews worked to rescue them, Goring said. "It looks like they're going to be OK," he added.

They were the only two people in the car and no other vehicles were involved, Goring said. The relationship between the woman and child wasn't immediately clear.

The woman was wearing a seatbelt and the child was strapped into a car seat. Those were major factors in keeping the pair safe, Goring said. "This is one of those cases where the seatbelt saved both their lives," he said.

The car received only minor damage.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
