HELPER, Carbon County — The Division of Wildlife Resources is searching for a mountain lion sighted near an elementary school in Helper Wednesday afternoon, according to the Carbon County School District.
Several witnesses spotted the mountain lion about 100 yards from Sally Mauro Elementary School around 2 p.m. The school was put on lockdown while officials from the Division of Wildlife Resources searched for the animal.
School was let out at 2:40 p.m. while three officials from the Division of Wildlife Resources secured the area as the students left.
Officials have not yet found the mountain lion but may bring in canines to track it. They want to either drive it back into the mountains or capture it and take it for release in a less populated area, according to Sally Mauro's superintendent, Steve Carlsen.
More information will be released as it is received.
