PROVO — A Provo man was hoping to identify a group of people caught on surveillance video taking shoes from his front porch.

Nate Nelson was hosting a party at his house Saturday night when the surveillance cameras captured three men and two women hanging around the porch.

When party guests were not coming or going, the video showed the group rummaging through the collection of partygoers’ shoes.

“This kid picks them up and he’s checking them out and then he’s like, ‘Yeah, these ones are my size,’” Nelson narrated while reviewing the video.

The group stayed around the porch of the home, located near 4300 Mile High Drive, for several minutes before eventually leaving with some of the shoes.

He said none of the party guests who subsequently watched the surveillance video recognized anyone in the group.

Nelson said he alerted Provo police to his video Monday.

A Provo police spokesman, while not familiar with the case, said he hadn’t heard of any other recent cases involving shoes stolen from front porches. He encouraged people to secure their property at all times — even shoes.

Nelson, who works in home security sales, said he uses the setup at his own house to explain to clients how a security system could work for them, and he never expected to capture video of people taking shoes from his front porch.

“I mean, ‘Home Alone,’ — you’ve got the ‘wet bandits,’ you’ve got the ‘sticky bandits,’” Nelson quipped. “And here in Provo, we have the ‘shoe bandits.’”
