LUBBOCK, Texas — Annie Brady had a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Sica Cuzic added 16 points and six rebounds to help No. 5 Salt Lake Community College to an 81-75 win over Jones County (Mississippi) at the National Junior College Athletics Association National Tournament Thursday in Lubbock, Texas.
Tia Hay supplied 12 points and four assists for the Bruins (30-4), who advanced to face Gulf Coast State (31-3) at 4 p.m. MDT Friday in the first national semifinal appearance in program history.
Salt Lake trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half. But after a 41-31 halftime deficit, the Bruins chipped away and held Jones County to 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Hay hit a 3-pointer with 2:28 left to give the Bruins a 72-70 lead — just their second lead of the game — and Salt Lake never trailed again. After Jones County tied the game at 72-all on the next possession, the Bruins went on a 9-3 run the rest of the way.
Hay, who had a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds in Wednesday’s 57-48 win over Cochise, drained another 3-pointer with 35 seconds left to give SLCC a game-high four-point lead, 79-75 en route to the win.
Alexis Tolefree scored 27 points to lead Jones County (30-2), which was making its first appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament in school history, advancing to the quarterfinals after Tuesday’s 91-82 upset of fourth-seeded Hutchinson Wednesday afternoon.
