SALT LAKE CITY — In February, the Utah Highway Patrol called a press conference to talk about the unusually high quantities of drugs that troopers were finding on the road.

Just two days later, troopers stopped a vehicle on I-80 and found 100 pounds of marijuana in vacuum-sealed bags, according to a newly unsealed search warrant.

On Feb. 17, a Jeep Compass was stopped for speeding on I-80 near 7200 West. Both the driver and passenger had New York drivers' licenses.

The trooper "could detect the odor of marijuana coming from the interior of the vehicle while speaking with the two occupants," the warrant states.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, the trooper found 101 pounds of marijuana "packaged into vacuum-sealed bags, which were then placed inside two large plastic totes and two large duffel bags," according to the warrant.

Just two days earlier, the UHP's top brass announced that they were seeing an astounding — and troubling — rise in the amount of meth on the road. In two weeks, troopers made 20 "significant" busts — including two that were happening while the press conference was taking place — resulting in the seizure of more than 110 pounds of meth. During that same time, 20 pounds of marijuana and 5 pounds of heroin were seized.
