SALT LAKE CITY — Layton's a confident bunch. That attitude helped the Lancers in their 76-43 blowout victory over Lehi in the first round of the 5A boys basketball tournament.
Layton led throughout and shot the ball well all game. That was especially true of leading scorer Truman Brown, who scored 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting. The highlight for Brown was a third-quarter banked-in buzzer-beater from a couple of feet behind the line, finishing off a 21-10 quarter that eliminated any doubt. That was after his final region game at Hunter, where he was held scoreless.
"It fell this game," Brown said, speaking about his shot. "It was good to bounce back with that."
Blake Hansen finished with 16 as the Lancers' second-leading scorer.
"Our defense was good, we were flying around," Hansen said. Then, we took care of the ball for most part."
Thanks to that turnover differential, Lehi had trouble scoring beyond the contributions of leader Ethan Tuckett, who scored 18 points on 8-15 shooting. Those eight field goals represented half of Lehi's total. Layton's defense was stifling all game, getting 17 steals on the night and many more deflections beyond that.
"That's just our guys, how we've been all night long," Layton head coach Kelby Miller said. "We really pride ourselves on getting deflections and steals and things like that."
Overall, 32 players from both teams saw playing time and gained tournament experience in the lopsided win. Layton moves on to the 5A quarterfinals, to be played Wednesday at Weber State University.
