LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — Officials have closed Little Cottonwood Canyon until Friday morning due to weather.

Unified Fire confirmed an avalanche Thursday afternoon. Snowbird Ski Resort said in a statement the avalanche occurred at 5:28 p.m.on Mt. Superior in Little Cottonwood Canyon, crossing a closed section of state Route 210 and into a parking lot.

Three parked vehicles were in the path of the slide, but there were no injuries as a result of the avalanche, Snowbird's statement said.

Unified Fire spokesperson Eric Holmes said the area impacted is where most daytime skiers and some employees park their vehicles, Holmes said.

Holmes said crews ran probe lines, used drills and were digging to make sure no one was trapped or buried.

“These kind of things can happen and this is a really good example of what can happen, even close to inbounds resorts,” Holmes said.

Snow did not cover the bypass road. Interlodge restrictions are in place.

UPD Canyon Alerts tweeted that the canyon would likely be closed until 8 a.m. Friday.
