SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man is in critical condition after firefighters carried him from his burning home Tuesday.

Firefighters responded to a duplex at 1457 S. 500 East about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, entering the home to find the man unconscious inside, Salt Lake fire spokeswoman Audra Sorensen said.

The 65-year-old man suffered smoke inhalation and "might have gone into cardiac arrest," according to Sorensen. He was rushed from the home on a stretcher and taken to University Hospital in critical condition.

The man's dog died in the fire. No one else lived in the home.

The accidental electrical fire began in the front room of the man's residence, Sorensen said. It caused an estimated $100,000 in damage.

The man's nephew lived in the other side of the duplex and called police when he noticed signs of the fire, Sorensen said. His side of the building was not affected by the blaze and is still livable.

Between 25 and 30 firefighters responded to the scene and had the blaze out in less than 15 minutes, Sorensen said.

"The fire wasn't terribly problematic, it was mostly injury to the gentleman that required the additional help," Sorensen said.
