BRIGHTON — A skier is in critical condition after apparently striking a tree near Brighton Resort Sunday, authorities said.

The skier, a 35-year-old man, was taken off the mountain in a medical helicopter just before noon and flown to a local hospital with a "traumatic injury," according to Unified police Lt. Brian Lohrke.

Unified fire spokesman Eric Holmes said the man was found unconscious by skiers near a tree. It was unknown how long the man had been there, but Holmes said the man was still unconscious when he was flown to the hospital.

Lohrke said the man was skiing with a friend, but there were no witnesses to the crash. The man's name was not immediately released.

Police were trying to determine if the skier was on the resort or off the property, Lohrke said.

Other details were not immediately made available.
