SALT LAKE CITY — On a very special edition of SportsBeat, KSL remembers the life and legacy of legendary BYU coach LaVell Edwards.

The Hall of Fame coach died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016 at the age of 86, and we all quickly realized what an impact he had on former coaches, players, friends, family and fans of all teams.

We expect our heroes to live forever, and coach Edwards was a hero to many. A legendary coach and a remarkable man, his iconic career only told a part of the effect he had on tens of thousands.

Who could forget the friendship he had with former Utah football coach Ron McBride, leading the way to a friendly rivalry. Coach Mac sat down with Rod Zundel to talk about the Edwards he knew.

The relationship between the two as like no other among head football coaches, and it only grew deeper after both retired from the game. Where ever they went together, you knew you would always have a laugh and walk away feeling better of your life.

Dozens of players also responded to KSL's request to share their favorite memories of coach Edwards. Among them were BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe, current football coach Kalani Sitake, Kansas City head coach Andy Reid, former lineman Hans Olsen and former Outland Trophy winner Jason Buck.

Legends never die, and the legend of LaVell Edwards will endure through his players, family and fans of BYU football and the state of Utah. A public memorial service has been planned for 6 p.m. MT Friday at the Utah Valley Convention Center, with a private funeral planned for Saturday morning for close friends, family and former players and their families.
