SANDY — It's that time of year when many of our resolutions sound the same: exercise more, eat better and get healthy. But meeting those goals is not one size fits all. For success, the experts say it's essential to find a fitness program that's realistic for you.

In 2015, Sarah Boone was shocked by the woman she saw in pictures of herself at her eldest daughter's wedding.

"I didn't want to be unhealthy and feel sluggish the rest of my life," Boone said. "I didn't want to be on that track."

Millions of steps on the treadmill, more thoughtful eating choices and 85 pounds later, Boone has met and kept the resolutions she made for 2016.

"That's what brings me joy this year is just to know that I'm living a healthy lifestyle," said Boone.

Mindy Buxton is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and a fitness and food coach at Life Centre Athletic Club in Sandy. She's worked with hundreds of clients over the years who are looking to improve their health by losing weight and inches.

Buxton says a fitness program "has to fit into your life and we just always underestimate that simple really does get results."

Buxton developed the program Boone used to get in shape and continues to use to stay healthy and fit.

"The biggest key is making it doable," Buxton said.

Buxton's internet-based Body Joy Slim Down program challenges participants to meet a few doable goals. These include: regular exercise five days a week, eating fewer processed sugars, more fruits and veggies, drinking lots of water and developing a positive mindset.

"There's no reason why you can't enjoy the process instead of waiting until you get to the end," Buxton said.

There's also accountability and support built into the Body Joy Slim Down program with participants checking in daily on a private Facebook page. They offer updates on their progress and seek help when they hit those inevitable plateaus and pitfalls along their fitness journeys.

Sisters-in-law Bree McDermott and Melissa McDermott decided to get a head start on their 2017 fitness goals by joining the Holiday Slim Down Challenge in November, and they're already seeing results.

"It's great to put on the stuff that you weren't able to wear earlier and it's really nice to have them slide on," Melissa McDermott said.

Bree McDermott is excited about the extra energy she seems to have each morning saying, "Just being healthy and just being strong for my kids is great."

They are lifestyle changes these women feel confident they can make and maintain over time.

"And that's how you get results year after year after year," Buxton said.

Boone sees the results when she looks at her before and after pictures. They are reminders of where she's been and where she's going.

"That's my path, that's what I'm on," Boone said.
